BBS Build Class Alum Announces Year By Biycle Challenge

Dedication to bike commuting is one thing, but this is a truly inspirational act of bicycle power. Ben Masters, who just made his first bike at the Studio, has announced his Year By Bicycle bid. For 365 days, he’ll pare down all transportation to his bicycle alone. No cars, no buses, no planes, no boats, no rocket ships… you get the picture.

Can he pull it off? What sacrifices and payoffs will ensue? It’ll certainly be dramatic, and Ben has created a blog to share it all with the bicycling public, http://www.yearbybicycle.blogspot.com/. Check it out, get inspired, drive less and bike more. Ben kicked things off by biking back to his home in Meadville, PA, from our Brooklyn Studio. We couldn’t be more impressed, and wish Ben the best of luck in completing his Year By Bicycle challenge.

Better Bikes, Lower Prices

The best bike in the world is the bike you build yourself.

We’re proud to announce new prices for BBS classes in 2010: $932 for a full bike class (including components), $632 for a frame only class, reduced from $1250 and $799.
We get better and smarter with every bike that gets built in our shop.
All the work we’ve done with the support of our fellow bike makers fuels our development projects towards our goal: to add as much value to as many lives as possible.

We are taking a radical step and cutting the price, based on a strict formula that passes on all process and design improvements to the customer. It is our way of ensuring we provide access to this awesome experience to as many people as possible.
And this is just the beginning…
We’re gonna keep at it until we get the whole world building awesome bikes.
We’re in the middle of some really cool projects that were suggested by some of the people that built bikes recently, and I can’t wait to see the impact on the bikes, the class experience and that all important price point.
For our current customers, that have already paid deposits on the $1250 price, we are going to give you the new price as well, so don’t worry.
We realize this is a radical business move, especially considering the wait list and interest at the old price. We are trying to be the most socially useful company we can, and this is putting our money where our mouth is.
Thanks to everyone that supported the building your own bike revolution in 2009, and a big hello to everyone that is ready to take part in 2010.
